This was an excellent film to have the writer/director combo present for, since it’s a 1990s slacker movie revisited, but I wasn’t sure what sort of perspective the makers were coming from and the Q&A session really explained it well. Props to the people asking the good questions.
Lev (and Whitney, who didn’t say much) explained that they were going for a sort of bent realism, and that they create a whole world for their characters then strip it away again for the film, which features snapshots from the characters’ lives at different points. So there is a plot, which is bubbling away underneath. They like to use non-actors and they are interested to explore textures other than the beautiful. Cool. So they weren’t pretentious hipsters then. Good to know.
