Mid90s

I think it is safe to say that this film would not have got distributed in Dutch cinemas without it being written and directed by Jonah Hill.

That is not of course in itself a bad thing and it is how the world goes, yet how many other amazing movies did not get the distribution because they didn’t have Hollywood royalty attached?

I actually quite like Jonah Hill, I am a recent convert, I only know him for 6 months after seeing first ‘Dont Worry He Won’t Get Far On Foot’ and then ‘Maniac.’ Yes, ‘Superbad’ passed me by!

The thing is though, the 90s slacker movies made by people like Harmony Korine were great because they were about kids and written (at least partially) by kids too. ‘Mid90s’ is a movie about kids written by an adult and I think you hear that a bit in the dialogue.

It’s not bad, it’s just a bit pointless.

It’s about a little kiddy drifting into skating and getting fucked up. That’s actually about it.

The kiddy is played by Sunny Suljic who was in killing of a sacred deer and ‘Dont Worry He…’ Wait what!? I don’t remember that.

Ah and his mum in this was in the crappy Alien sequel. I knew i recognised her from somewhere!

It is cool that Harmony Korine gets a cameo but movies like ‘Kent Park’, ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Kids’ already did what ‘Mid90s’ is trying to do.

However i am loving the Christian hate on imdb!!

Shoplifters

I don’t particularly like watching trailers for films, mostly because they can give away big plot twists and why would i want to see that? Sometimes they can be good to check what a film is like if i am 50-50 about sitting down to it, but most of the time i like to go on feeling. A feeling created by the film being about a certain theme or having a certain person in it.. a friend always likes to do sneak previews ie total random selection, but i saw too many shit films that way. The problem is there is a lot of dross out there. So i prefer to hunt down certain directors lately.

Kore-eda is one of them on the biglist, but funnily enough i nearly missed out on seeing shoplifters in the cinema becuase i saw the trailer and badly misconstrued what it was about. Somehow i also thought it was korean!? But if you had said to me that it was by the person who made ‘Air Doll’ i would have def been up for watching it. Nevertheless i caught it at the end of the cinematic run.

I didn’t realise also that it won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, but then again ‘Blackkklansman’ won the second prize soooooo i don’t know how much credibility the prizes have any more… i mean i haven’t seen Blackklansman maybe its fantastic but i did see the trailer (HAHA) and it looked like mainstream guff. On an important theme, yes but that doesn’t mean it needs to win the fuckign prize in Cannes right?

Here’s my alt.oscars.. the genghis awards

Anyway. Back to ‘Shoplifters’. Bad title. Good film. Very well acted, interesting subtle meandering story … hmm what else to say. Probably in Japanese culture the stealing an d the messiness of the house all seem rather transgressive, but for me it’s normal so maybe i missed something there.

But it’s a good film. I want to see more from Kore-eda, obviously he is interested by family and loneliness.

This was in the end quite a decent double bill with River (with some rugby in between oh hoho oyu don’t have to be crazy to work here but it helps).

Werk Ohne Autor

Well this will doubt win the foreign language Oscar. And the acting is for sure great, everyone is super beautiful and very good at what they do AND it’s really epic, but the whole thing is somehow overplayed and ultimately uninteresting. I would think this was an amazing movie if i was 13.

The power of KUNST triumphs over all! But does it really…

More to the point why is this three hours long!?

cineville list

Cripes I’ve had cineville on/off since 2014 and the current total is sitting on 165 films … This figure includes some but by no means all of the sneak previews and festival films seen with Cineville at AFFR, Camera Japan, Cinema Architecture, ENFF, Go Short, IFFR, Movies that Matter, Vlaamse Filmfest etc etc

It makes me realise that this was quite a serious hobby.

Wad, overleven op de grens van water en land

This documentary about the animals eking out a living on the mudflats (wad) on the north coast of the Netherlands was amazing!

You’ve got seals, who are always fun and also crazy birds running up and down the waterfront.

You’ve also got a whole load of death and starvation.

La vita e bruta. But actually that was good, I’ve been feeling a bit down and the film was a slap in the face – “come on at least you ain’t rolling around starving in some fucking mud my child.”

Demain tout commence

Demain tout commence (Tomoro everything starts) about a guy (Omar Sy) living in some tropical paradise who has a baby dumped on him by a woman (Clemence Poesy) he slept with the previous summer. She runs off, he tries to follow her to London and doesn’t find her, but then becomes a stuntman and brings up the daughter himself.

Haha Ridiculous.

Not a true story. Haha.

Then the woman turns up 8 years later and wants to get the kid back. And hilarity ensues.

It was ok, it was quite cheesy. But fun to see a French film set in London in Cinerama in Rotterdam. I felt awfully cosmopolitan.
