lazzaro felice revisited

damn it was good to see this again and to be able to sit back and appreciate how well made it is.

i like how the young and the older versions of a character actually look like each other

i like how i still don’t feel like i understood it 100% since it connects on a deep emotional level instead of the logical

i like how the at the end of the film i have a really complex and satisfied feeling

The 1st Annual Genghis Awards

Oscars? Schmooooscars quite frankly! Here is where it’s at…

GENGHIS gives awards for the best films seen in the last year or so…

And without further ado I’m handing the mike over to Genghis. He says the winners get a potato but if you want a ribbon you’ll have to fight him for it.

BEST CAT – Abatutu – the star and narrator of De Wilde Stad

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY – Simone D’Onofrio for Bangla. This film sparkled!

BEST DOCUMENTARY – Rabot. This gets in by virtue of me accidentally watching it again at Lantaren Venster, first seen at IFFR18. It’s a heartwrenching meditation on home. This was perhaps the hardest category since there have been some other worldclass docus this year.

BEST ACTOR – Stepan Devonin in Core of the World. He has a good face and will go far!

BEST ACTRESS – Eva Melander for Gräns. An amazingly sympathetic portrayal of a woman who knows she is different from everyone else.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Michel Simon in l’Atalante. What a legend. RiP.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Alba Rohrwacher in Lazzaro Felice

BEST FILM – Ni Juge Ni Soumis – this film about a Belgian judge is i suppose a documentary, but it’s also just an unbelievably weird film in its own right.

BEST DIRECTOR – Alicia Rohrwacher for Lazzaro Felice

BEST EDITING WIZADRY – Shadow – the special effects were topnotch, shame the story was so shit

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT – Jan Švankmajer – This year he released his last feature film Insect and produced a storming exhibition at the EYE (review forthcoming)

He is off to schmooze … SEEYA!
